"We wanted to 'go solar' mainly because of the environmental impact, but we also had to consider it as a practical investment for our home. Our contractor, Prepared Power, helped us to clearly understand what would be involved in the project, both cost and benefits. When we had all the facts, the decision to make the investment in solar energy was easy. It is definitely a win/win situation for the environment and for us."
-Karla Jensen, Homeowner, Binghamton, New York
Homeowners Mark and Karla Jensen of Binghamton, New York had available roof space for a solar installation. They have an interest in energy efficiency for their home, and considered solar a great way to save money and electricity.
Due to high federal and state government incentives, the Jensen's original investment was reduced by more than 70%. The 28-panel system will produce around 30 kilowatts of power on a typical, sunny day. The Jensen's are expected to save more than $20,000 on electricity costs over 25 years.
The 5.04 kW system will save approximately $513 annually at 2009 electricity prices and will provide a hedge against escalating energy prices. The system will also displace more than 4,200 pounds of CO2 per year, and generate more than 4,600 kWh of electricity annually.
